5th Grade Social Studies Standards
Overview of 1st Quarter (August - October, 2018):
Our first unit -"Native American Cultural Regions" - begins Friday, August 31, 2018. Students will learn about how tribes used their resources to survive in the different Native American cultural regions that existed across North America: Eastern Woodlands, Southeast, Great Plains, Southwest, Plateau, California Intermountain, and the Pacific Northwest. Students will be given an end-of-unit test to assess learning.
We will read, take notes, and create a map to understand an overview of all of the cultural regions, then students will choose which region/tribe to explore further and complete a PBL (project-based learning). During the PBL experience, students will work in small cooperative groups to conduct research and create a presentation with visuals (project board, artifacts). PBL's will be assessed by teacher. Projected end of PBL: October 25.
Our second unit - "The Age of Exploration" will begin in October. Students will learn about the voyages and impacts of eight individuals who explored in North America during the 1400's-1600's: Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Juan Ponce de Leon, Hernan Cortes, Henry Hudson, Jacques Cartier, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, & Robert de La Salle. Students will compare/contrast the explorers and understand the lasting impact each expedition made on the development of the New World. There will be an end-of-unit test to assess learning.
